Koronázás a régi Szent Péter bazilikában
2022.01.07.
On December 25th 800, in the midst of the celebration of the Christmas Mass, while Charlemagne is kneeling on the so-called "rota porphyretica" (a circular stone of red porphyry fixed to the ground), Pope Leo III places a golden crown on his head while the people present throw the triple acclamation: "To Charles, the most venerable Augustus crowned by God, to the great emperor who brought peace, life and victory!".
The coronation of Charlemagne, represented here by Raphael in the Vatican Rooms, will be the most magnificent ceremony ever held in the ancient Basilica.

MASTRO TITTA
Mastro Titta, nickname of Giovanni Battista Bugatti, officially working as painter of umbrellas, was in reality the executioner of the State of the Church, the “Master of Justice” (from where comes his name, while “Titta” is a diminutive of his name).
Famous also as the “Executioner of Rome”, he continued his carrier till 1864 when retired with a pension of 30 ecus per month, after having killed 514 people.
In the picture you can see the axe and the cloak of Mastro Titta, exposed in the Criminological Museum of Rome.

PORTA ASINARIA

ASINARIA DOOR
Located next to St. John's Door, it was originally a small gate without towers that allowed passing through the Aurelian Walls to reach Via Asinara, and further on Via Tuscolana.
The name seems to come from the Asinii family that owned properties in the surroundings or perhaps is due to the fact that many donkeys (asini) passed through it carrying goods.
In the V Century the gate was completely rebuilt by Emperor Honorius, when the entrance arch covered with travertine was made wider and two semicircular towers were added on the sides.
The gate was kept open until the time of Pope Pius IV and was then definitively closed and replaced by St. John's Door, built in 1573.
A kapu IV.

Teatro Argentina
On January 5th 1888 the restoration work on the Argentine Theatre, which takes on the appearance it still has today thanks to the project by the architect Gioacchino Ersoch, was completed.
He renovated the stalls, the stage, the stairs leading to the boxes, the atrium and equipped the structure with an effective heating system.

A dogali obeliszk régi helye
OLD LOCATION OF THE DOGALI OBELISK
The Dogali Obelisk, about 9 feet tall, was originally stood in Heliopolis, but was brought by Domitian in the I Century AD to Rome.
At some point in history, it was toppled, and found in 1883 by Rodolfo Lanciani near the Church of St. Mary over Minerva.
It was erected in front of the Termini Station to commemorate the 1887 Battle of Dogali, in Ethiopia, and then in 1924 it was moved to its present site for the renovation of the Station.
In the pic, the original location of the obelisk, with the old facade of the Station.

Borromini's Chapel of the Three Magi
2020.12.21.
The remarkable Cappella dei Re Magi (Chapel of the Three Magi, 1654-64), which was designed by that genius of the Baroque Francesco Borromini (1599-1667), is part of the Palazzo di Propaganda Fide.
The dedication to the Magi was decided by Cardinal Barberini on the assumption that the three kings could be regarded as the first pagans who embraced the Christian faith; their conversion could therefore be considered as a symbol of those promoted by the congregation.

The Day Pope John Paul II Was Shot
2020.12.21.
https://www.walksinrome.com/blog/plaque-marking-the-spot-where-pope-john-paul-ii-was-shot-on-may-13-1981-st-peters-square-rome
Embedded in the shiny, black cobble-stones of Piazza San Pietro is a small, white marble plaque, which is engraved with the coat of arms of John Paul II (r. 1978-2005). The plaque marks the place where the pope was shot on May 13th, 1981, just five days short of his sixty-first birthday.
It was a Wednesday, the day the pope holds a weekly audience in St Peter's Square. John Paul II had just entered the piazza in an open car (the so-called pope-mobile) when Mehmet Ali Agca, a twenty-three year old Turk, fired four shots, one of which hit the pope in the abdomen and another his left hand. The other bullets struck two innocent bystanders.
The pope spent three weeks in hospital; the would-be assassin was sentenced to life imprisonment. (As a result of an act of clemency, Agca was released in 2010.)
John Paul II fervently believed that his life had been saved through the intervention of the Virgin Mary, to whom he was particularly devoted. And so, in thanks, he had a mosaic of the Madonna and Child placed in an aedicule, overlooking the side of the square in which he was shot. The image is entitled MATER ECCLESIAE (Mother of the Church).
On the third anniversary of the shooting, Pope John Paul II visited the shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal. The assassination attempt had taken place on her feast day and the pope donated to the shrine the bullet that had lodged in his body. It was later set in the crown of precious stones, which adorns the statue of Mary.

Chateaubriand's Monument to Poussin
2020.12.21.
https://www.walksinrome.com/blog/a-monument-to-nicolas-poussin-church-of-san-lorenzo-in-lucina-rome
The great French painter Nicolas Poussin (1596-1665), who spent much of his working life in Rome, is buried in the church of San Lorenzo in Lucina. The monument to Poussin was erected between 1828 and 1832 by François-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand (1768-1848), the French writer and diplomat.
The dedication reads (in translation): '...Chateaubriand to Nicolas Poussin, for the glory of the arts and the honour of France'. The bust is signed P. Lemoyne and the bas-relief of Poussin's most famous painting, Et in Arcadia Ego, is by Leon Vaudoyer.
The epitaph proclaims: 'PARCE PIIS LACRYMIS VIVIT PUSSINUS IN VRNA/VIVERE QVI DEDERAT NESCIVS IPSE MORI/HIC TAMEN IPSE SILET SI VIS AVDIRE LOQUENTVM/MIRVM EST IN TABVLIS VIVET ET ELOQVITVR.' In essence, it states that Poussin is silent now, but if you are prepared to listen, you can hear him speaking through his pictures.
