Esterhazy Madonna, Raphael painting of princes and empresses, returns to Eternal City
2020.01.19.
https://www.romereports.com/en/2018/02/25/esterhazy-madonna-raphael-painting-of-princes-and-empresses-returns-to-eternal-city/

For a few months, the Barberini Palace's walls will be adorned with “The Esterhazy Madonna,” a work painted by Raphael in 1508, when the artist was only 25 years old.

It's one of the key Renaissance paintings and marks Raphael's transition from Florence to Rome, where he was commissioned to decorate the papal residence.

CINZIA AMMANNATO
Exhbition commissioner
“This painting's influence on Roman ambience could be felt in Raphael's subsequent works in the Pontifical Household.”

Raphael conveyed a sense of intimate everyday life through the sweetness of the Esterhazy Madonna.

Her gesture contrasts with the magnificent scenery of the Tuscan countryside, in which Raphael included Roman ruins as a symbol of his renewed artistic life.

CINZIA AMMANNATO
Exhbition commissioner
“Roman heritage is expressed in the background through Roman relics. The Temple of Vespasian and the Torre dei Conti in the Roman Forum are seen clearly.”
The work has its story. Pope Clement XI presented it as a gift to Empress Elisabeth of Brunswick after her conversion to Catholicism.

Years later, the Habsburg gave the painting to the Esterhazy family, who were prestigious patrons. In the 19th century, their successors donated the work to the Hungarian State.

Now, it will be displayed in Rome until April 8.

FLAMINIA GENNARI SANTORI
Director, National Gallery of Ancient Art in Rome
“This work has rarely been shown in Italy. It's a special loan we've received from the National Museum in Budapest. It's part of an exchange agreement – we'll lend them other important works.”

The painting was stolen in 1983 and found a few weeks later in a Greek monastery. Now it returns to Rome, the city where it was completed.

Sculpture of Mary Magdalene changed famous artist's life
2020.01.19.
His art was called too academic... too technical... , too neoclassical... and even too cold... Then these tears changed everything.

They are found on the suffering face of Mary Magdalene.

GIUSEPPE PAVANELLO
Exhibit organizer
“Mary Magdalene's tears are based on Bernini's 'Daphne,' a Baroque sculpture. This is important because in that period, critics said the work came entirely from the heart. So where is the Neoclassicism in this sculpture?”

His sculpture of a penitent Magdalene forever changed the way his art was perceived. Now Rome honors him with this exhibition, which examines the artist's relationship with the Eternal City. Canova never wanted even his smallest sculpture to leave the capital.

He focused his efforts on preventing Roman art from being dispersed to the rest of the world.

GIUSEPPE PAVANELLO
Exhibit organizer
“We wanted to also draw attention to Canova's relationship with Rome, as inspector general of the 'Accademia di Belli Arti.' Pope Pius VII gave him this role to defend the Roman artistic patrimony, especially from leaving Rome.”
He was not always able to successfully fulfill his duties as the inspector general of the Antiquities and Fine Arts of the Pontifical States. He lost some battles, as with this work, “Barberini Faun,” the epitome of Hellenistic perfection. Canova failed to keep it in Rome. After years of diplomatic tension, the work ended up in Bavaria.

It was not all failures however.

GIUSEPPE PAVANELLO
Exhibit organizer
“The Giustiniani family wanted to sell two ancient funerary monuments. Nobody in Rome wanted to buy them, but outside the city there were many buyers. Canova bought them and gifted them to the Vatican Museums.”

This is one of the monuments that Canova donated. It can now be enjoyed at the exhibit as a symbol of the artist's love for Rome and his art.

Also evident is Canova's fascination with the papacy, as seen with these marble busts of Popes Clement XIII... and Pius VII...

It was the period of French domination of the Italic Peninsula, when Napoleon kidnapped Pope Pius VII, taking him away from Rome...Canova captures history in his sculptures.

Also from that period is this sculpture in which the artist portrays his own interpretation of religion... He wanted to donate the finished statue to St. Peter's Basilica, but some clerics were opposed, so he rendered only this bust.

Strongly respectful of classical art, he never copied any ancient sculptures. He saw Classicism as the starting point of his artistic production, full of delicacy, harmony and an eternal beauty... like this one of a ballerina with her hands on her hips.... It is a profound piece that closes this exhibit in the Eternal City.

8 millió euróért vehetne Rómában a Borghese galéria egy újabb Bernini szobrot
2020.01.19.
Róma híres barokk művészének, Lorenzo Bernininek a legtöbb szemet gyönyörködtető szobra a Borghese galériában található.
VIII.

E in vendita.

Obiettivo? 1968-2018: i primi 50 anni di Sotheby’s in Italia. Bernini, Fontana, Della Robbia, Morandi per una mostra-celebrazione
2020.01.14.

Rome museum raises funds to buy Bernini bust
2020.01.14.
Borghese Gallery needs to raise €8 million to purchase Bernini sculpture.

Rome's Galleria Borghese has begun a fundraising campaign, through Italy's Art Bonus favourable tax regime, for the purchase of an important bronze sculpture by Baroque genius Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

The work, a bust of Barberini Pope Urban VIII, was created by Bernini in 1658 for Cardinal Antonio Barberini, and is currently the property of his descendants, reports Italian news agency ANSA.
The future Urban VIII was closely connected to Cardinal Scipione Borghese and was an influential figure in helping the cardinal assemble his vast art collection, including Bernini's monumental sculptures which still grace the halls of Galleria Borghese today.

The work for sale, with an estimated price tag of €8 million, is therefore closely linked to its potential future home. The Roman museum says that - if purchased - the bronze would be displayed in a place of honour within the collection, alongside the list of donors who helped in its acquisition.
The Art Bonus is a tax credit equal to 65 per cent of charitable contributions that individuals or companies make in favour of public cultural heritage.
