Clock Square

The square's name derives from the clock tower on the site of the convent of Filipinos who appears here . The tower, built by Borromini in 1648 , is topped by a castle that supports the bells and is flanked by two stones with heraldic star . Under the face of the watch , is inserted a mosaic designed by Pietro da Cortona depicting the Madonna della Vallicella .

On the square, in the past also known as Piazza dei Rigattieri for the presence of a brisk trade in used items, stands the building of the Banco di S. Spirit , built at the behest of Bishop Virginio Spada, and allocated to the seat of the bench , against the advice of the ministers of the bank , which they considered the area too far from the business center . Work began in 1660 by Borromini , but the death of Virginio Spada , the ministers decided that the school would be the new headquarters building which is still referred to as the building of the Banco di S. Spirit : so it was that the Marquis Orazio Spada was forced to buy the building , plus unfinished , for the sum of 25,000 crowns and other impiegarne 35,000 to complete the work to Borromini . The palace today is a result of the renovation work of the late nineteenth century by the architect Gaetano Koch , who completely transformed the seventeenth-century work at the behest of the new owners , the accounts Bennicelli . In this house was born and lived for a time the most famous of Bennicelli , Adriano , better known as Count Tacchia , famous for his way of life, for the unconventional behavior , combined with a style of dress ever.

At the intersection of Via del Governo Vecchio square you can admire Palazzo Corcos creating an interesting building of the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century , attributed to a follower of Borromini : under a canopy with fringes and trimmings , elaborate stucco frame encloses a valuable fresco eighteenth century with the Madonna and Child Blessing golden tones . The palace was built by a branch of a Jewish family , the Corcos, the exponent of which the most relevant , Solomon , after his conversion to Christianity and acquired the surname Boncompagni , said beginning the construction of the building on the Old Town Square . The building consists of a main front of which there are five windows on two floors plus mezzanine ones . The windows are without doubt among the most beautiful of Rome, characterized by the presence of refined decoration in the central niche of women's faces and masks. Among the shops on the ground floor opens the central door, with two columns at the center stands the emblem of the Boncompagni. Inside there is a colonnaded courtyard on two sides with three arches supported by columns combined with a central tank with rocks and water.
